With a slightly harder lead than soft pastels, the Conte à Paris pastel pencils are recommended for complex detail work and subtle shading, especially when drawing from life, as well as for portraits and representational art in general. Pastel Pencils are best used on white or pale coloured fine or medium grained paper. The pastel texture makes it suitable for stumping or tortillion work, which gives lovely effects of light and shade. Pastel pencils are best sharpened with the help of a cutter, and their lead filed on a scraper or on sandpaper. In this manner the lead will not snap as it would in a sharpener
